The less discerning listener could accuse this work of being merely an ultra-minimalist remix of John Cage's famous 4'33", yet such comparisons would be woefully unjust. This is emphatically Digital Silence, a starkly different beast to Cage's resolutely analogue form of muteness. The boldly creative idea to "record without mic" daringly subverts our notions of both recording and silence. Despite the creator's fragile claim that the work represents "nothing" we are left with a palpable sense of the real and the tangible, veering as it does between the playful and the profound. This is perilously close to genius.
