Altenthann – Isolated Bavarian Church Bell at Distance (300 m, Open Window, Post‑Rain Ambience)

UCS Category: AMBIENCE
UCS Subcategory: RELIGIOUS
CatID / CatShort: AMBRlgn / AMB

This field recording captures a Bavarian Catholic church bell ringing in the quiet rural village of Altenthann (Regensburg District, Bavaria, Germany). The bell tower is positioned approximately 300 meters from the microphone location. The Zoom F3 recorder was placed at an open window of a residential building, oriented sideways to the church, creating a naturally diffused yet clearly isolated bell timbre.
The bell tone appears clean, resonant, and spatially distant, with a pronounced fundamental frequency and well‑defined overtones characteristic of traditional Bavarian cast‑bronze church bells. The recording preserves the long, open‑air decay and natural reflections across the surrounding village structures and winter landscape.
The session took place on a December day after a light rain shower, just as the sun began to break through, resulting in a calm, crisp acoustic environment. Subtle rural ambience remains audible in the background — faint village noise, soft environmental stillness, and distant, minimal traffic typical for the region — all low enough not to mask the bell signal.
Captured at 48 kHz / 32‑bit floating point, using Immersive Soundscape "The Earthside" Omni microphones with a Jecklin Disc, the recording provides:

wide yet natural stereo imaging
realistic localization of the bell tower
full harmonic body of the bell
atmospheric sense of distance and space

Processing was intentionally minimal:
gentle high‑pass filtering and slight gain adjustment. No EQ, no noise reduction, no transient shaping. The result is a raw, authentic representation of a Bavarian village bell in natural winter ambience.
Use cases: film/documentary atmospheres, cathedral/ritual sound design, historic ambience beds, rural establishing shots, spatial audio design, bell‑tone analysis, heritage archiving.
