While working on one of my horror samples, I was fascinated to discover that filtering a sound through a vocoder and frequency shifter made it sound like a footsteps on dirt or gravel. Its thin timbre makes it seem like something you'd hear on a system with an old sound card, hence the "Retro Style" label.
