This song is inspired by a folk song of the Swedes in Finland, which came to Germany in about 1925 by Erich Spohr and Herrmann Gumbel with appropriate lyrics and music as "Winde wehn, Schiffe gehn" (to be heard as an excerpt in the chimes of the song presented here).
Since that time the song is so at home here that it has long since been understood as a self-evident German cultural asset.
