Zoom H5 VS Tascam FR-AV2 tests

Hardware testing

Trying to measure the difference in self-noise between different configurations, and see the benefits of mic upgrades (Stock XY mic vs nt5) or adding a fethead phantom pre-amp, and comparing the pre-amps between the Tascam FR-AV2 and Zoom H5.

Not exactly scientific. BUT, IRL I could hear the cars outside and ticking clearly before "noise" (which there was, there's an airvent permenantly on in the bathroom next to my bedroom I was recording in.)
Disappointed, that despite all my gear, I can't achieve recordings that can records "quiet" places / sounds with better dynamic range/noise than my own ear. However the Tascam does seem to provide noticeable benefits in recording quality.

The Tascam recorded 32bit 96khz, the zoom h5 in 24bit 48khz. (It can do 96 too, but only in stereo mode, and it has weird behaviour of trying to mix the stereo signal and has a limiter at -6 db or something, IDK I feel like it's safer in "multi-track" mode which is limited to 48khz.)

I disapprove using my voice/spoken words, in AI training or shuffling words/syllables to create new sentences or swap what's being said. You may use it in video games, music, beat making, video projects etc... However this is public domain, I'm publishing this knowing well some people might not respect that, then it's between them and their god (figure of speech) :)

Here I am, after extensive listening and comparison ! ;-)
Of course, as expected, the best combo is probably FR-AV2 + NT5, IMO ! Sounds richer and fuller than FR-AV2 + fathead + nt5.
However, I have to admit that I’m a bit disappointed by the difference between FR-AV2 + sm58 and H5 at full gain + sm58. I would have thought than the Tascam would win hands down, and that’s not really the case.
Thank you very much for this long and very informative comparison.
