Half-speed extract from https://freesound.org/people/Philip_Goddard/sounds/699999/, in which latter my use of both mezzo and soprano Gypsy chimes evokes a weirdly beautiful elemental sort of intense melancholy, to which the large and small sets of bamboo chimes, with their dry, woody, rustic knocking and rattling tones are an uplifting foil, as also are the occasional bits of early spring birdsong. Here the octave-lower pitch and slower speed of everything draws one into the heart of the sound, but here deep mystery is challenging melancholia to a duel!
Chimes used:
1. Music of the Spheres Gypsy Mezzo
2. Music of the Spheres Gypsy Soprano
3. Bamboo chimes, large and small set, purchased very cheaply at a local store (and definitely not made to last!)
I made this recording on 5 March 2013, beside the Hunter's Path, Teign Gorge, Drewsteignton, Devon, UK, high up on the north side of the valley.
This recording taking place. The large and small bamboo chimes are the leftmost, closest to the recorder, and the Gypsy chimes are further from the latter because of their loud and penetrating tone. The soprano Gypsy chimes are a bit difficult to recognise here because of a broken-off birch trunk immediately behind them.
Techie stuff
The recorder was Sony PCM-M10, with Røde DeadKitten furry windshield (original, more effective, version), placed on a Velbon Mini tripod. I soon stopped using the latter because of its weight and the malevolent sprung clip type of leg-length locks, which bite one's fingers painfully and quite readily drew blood or at least gave me blood blisters.
Post-recording processing was to apply EQ in Audacity to correct for the muffling effect of the windshield, and more recent processing with the A1 Stereo Control VST plugin (160% widening). I used the 'Change speed' effect in Audacity to produce this half-speed version.
