Early spring birdsong in undercliff scrub, heard from the clifftop where the Lincombe valley, near Salcombe Regis and Weston, ends at a clifftop (part of Dunscombe Cliff) rather than opening directly to the sea. It features particularly chiffchaff and robin, with background sea sound muffled because the 'action' is hidden by the shape of the cliff. The sea action is unduly loud for the modest wave size because of the waves action on shingle beach, making the pebbles roll noisily as the waves surge forward and then draw back.
I made this recording on 26 March 2014 during a hike from Sidmouth to Beer, Devon, UK. I'd not been expecting to record here, but at the time I had little of chiffchaff in my collection of recordings so far, and here they were doing themselves proud at times.
This recording in progress; note the recorder's furry windshield — it's perched on a branch of the blackthorn by means of a GorillaPod.
Techie stuff
The recorder was Sony PCM-M10, with Røde DeadKitten furry windshield. It was placed, as already noted, on a branch of a stunted blackthorn bush by means of a GorillaPod.
Post-recording processing was to apply EQ in Audacity to correct for the muffling effect of the windshield — and then more recently stereo widening / sharpening-up using the VST plugin A1 Stereo Control (160% widening).
Please remember to give this recording a rating — Thank you!
