Strong wind in the trees high up in Teign Gorge (2)

Weather

Strong wind gusts rushing over the top of the hill and roaring through the trees as they come racing, chasing, down and around, over or into the deep steep-sided valley known as the Teign Gorge (Drewsteignton, Devon, UK) on 1 February 2020. This isn't quite gale force, but the gusts are still pretty strong.

Second of two recordings here, this one on the slope just slightly above the Hunter's Path, just inside the western side of Drewston Wood, and in a rather windier spot than the first recording position, facing across the wind so that the main gusts were coming across from right (from the hilltop) to left (down in the valley).

The moment you listen to this after the first recording you'd notice the difference. The latter has a more monolithic, broad-swathe, imposing and majestic sound. Here, although the main gusts still come across as imposing and majestic, what is immediately apparent is a much greater vibrancy in the sound, with a clear differentiation between the sound of upper slope on the right and the seething mass of moving detail straight ahead and even more so down in the valley to left and behind. The overall effect is particularly strongly 3-dimensional.

Advisory:
To hear the intricate detail of the vibrant sound panorama, do treat yourself by listening to this with high-grade headphones!

This recording taking place -- looking along Hunter's Path
Looking roughly west along the Hunter's Path (left) during this recording. The recorder on its short tripod, with its black furry windshields, is visible a bit right of centre and a little above-middle vertically; it's facing away from us, about WNW.

Techie stuff:
The recorder was Sony PCM-D100, with two nested custom Windcut furry windshields. It was used on a lightweight Hama tripod.

Initial post-recording processing was to use Audacity to apply an EQ curve to compensate for muffling from the furry windshields, and to use the dynamic EQ VST plugin TDR Nova GE, via a custom profile, to tame microphone wind noise.

Please remember to give this recording a rating — Thank you!

Haha! Klankbeeld, I guess you listened with headphones?

Some more Teign Gorge wind recordings to come eventually, all different — The wind effectively paints the landscape of course, and the Teign Gorge gives really superb 3D soundscapes from high vantage points.

Hence my also being really keen to record thunderstorms there, despite all the issues involved in being in high and relatively exposed situations with lightning around! :-)
