Soundscapes > Indoors

The recording contains a mix of soundscapes from two traditional market squares in Colombia: Galería Alameda in Cali and Plaza del Siete de Agosto in Bogotá, D.C. You can hear people chatting negotiating fruits and vegetables. The recording is part of the outcomes of the research project “The Sound Identity of Market Squares” conducted at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana of Colombia. The file was recorded and mixed by Roberto Cuervo Pulido, Associate Professor in the Department of Design, Faculty of Architecture and Design, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá campus, Colombia; and by Joaquín Eduardo Llorca Franco, Associate Professor in the Department of Habitat, Faculty of Creation and Habitat, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Cali campus, Colombia; and by Jonathan Reina.

The work is framed within research-creation as a mode of artistic production linked to academic processes, and it describes how the documentary material obtained from field recordings is used for the composition of a soundscape. Through a methodology that integrates research findings with the creative process, the aim is to express the identity of the market squares through a sonic narrative.

This composition seeks to transform the listener’s auditory experience, moving from a passive mode of listening—where familiar sounds and references are recognized—to an active mode of listening that invites aesthetic discernment and a deeper appreciation of the acoustic identity of market squares.

A Roland CS-10EM binaural microphone and a Zoom H4N was used for the recording.
