Just past midnight the wild pigs saunter down to the marshy edge of SMNWR's Headquarters Pond ready for a sweet drink of water after a long night of rutting in the wildlife refuge mud. They should have learned by now that some of the biggest marsh alligators lay motionless in the mud just inches from the shoreline; hungry and patiently waiting. As one of the most spectacular hunters of the swamps and marshes, mature alligators can leap and grab faster than the blink of an eye (I've seen them climb a chain link fence). This two minute audio captures the midnight alligator's lunge and grab and the pig's last screams as it is taken down into the depths of the swampy water. Sony PCM recorders, LOM MikroUsi and windbubbles, dry bags. September 15, 2023 St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge
