Approximately two hours of shallow freshwater pond's Southern Cricket Frog, Acrus gryllus, advertisements (calls) in the SMNWR. Southern Cricket Frogs calls remind me of glass marbles or small steel balls on strings swinging back and forth and rhythmically clicking upon striking each other. As a field recordist and biologist I'd know that if I was walking through the wilds and heard Southern Cricket Frogs I'd be near a shallow freshwater pond, probably full of vegetation such as water lilies, pickerelweed or duck potato. Southern Cricket Frogs, unlike Green Tree Frogs, do not have toe pads and do not climb trees. Rather, they inhabit low growing aquatic and shoreline vegetation. Southern Cricket Frogs are usually found inland a ways from the Gulf Coast and brackish marshes. They are a reliable sign of the presence of fresh water ecosystems, especially shallow ponds as stated above. This audio recording was compiled using Sony PCM D10 recorders and stereo pug in microphones protected by windscreens and drybags. April 2023.
