the notes are A, B, C. those are the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th scale degrees of the G major scale. or the 1st, 2nd, 3rd scale degrees of the A minor scale. you are right, though, that this could also be some notes from a C major scale or an E minor scale. good sleuthing!
