I specialize in the capture and study of ambient soundscapes, with a particular emphasis on urban and city environments. My practice involves both field recording and post-processing, and I’m especially focused on the spatial and psychoacoustic qualities of sound in everyday settings.

I work with a broad array of recording devices, ranging from compact handheld units to legacy digital tape equipment, allowing for a flexible response to a variety of acoustic environments. I’m also actively exploring mobile workflows using iPhone and iPad platforms, integrating them into my field kit for quick deployment and discrete recording.

Recording Equipment:

Edirol R-09: A compact solid-state recorder known for its reliability and clean preamps, ideal for quick ambient captures.

Zoom H2n: Versatile with mid-side and surround recording capabilities, often used for immersive soundscapes.

Zoom H4, H5, H6: Modular recorders offering XLR inputs and interchangeable mic capsules; the H6 is particularly useful for multi-source recordings and complex spatial setups.

Sony TCD-D8: A professional-grade DAT recorder used for archival-quality digital recording. Despite its age, it provides a unique sonic character and is valuable for capturing clean, full-resolution audio.

Monitoring:

Sony MDR-7506: Industry-standard closed-back headphones, valued for their detailed and accurate frequency response, especially in the midrange. Essential for critical listening and field monitoring.

Binaural Recording:

Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset: iOS-compatible in-ear binaural mics integrated into headphones. Offers a practical solution for immersive, head-related transfer function (HRTF)-based recordings, especially effective in pedestrian environments or dynamic urban spaces.

My work is guided by a continual interest in the perceptual and spatial dimensions of environmental sound. I often experiment with microphone placement, polar pattern combinations, and real-time monitoring to explore how ambient audio can convey narrative, atmosphere, and a sense of place.
