Going through some old recordings on my hard drive.
Elastic band wrapped around a plastic filing box. The plastic box works well as a resonant body and it is possible (with a lot of practice and some luck) to scrape/rub the elastic band and get 'violin-like' sounds.
It is also necessary to experiment with the object used to scrape/rub/bow the elastic band. I tried different types of pen and settled for one that worked best. It had a very slight rough texture to improve grip and that works well to induce the rubber band to vibrate.
This recording is varied containing plucked, bowed, scrapping sounds and also some more or less accidental ones where the elastic buzzed against the box and some percussion and scrapping on the box itself.
Unfortunately the dynamics contained some loud peaks one the plucks and percussion and also some much quieter sounds, so I have used the Audacity compressor with a ratio of 2:1.
Recorded with Zoom H1 and home made contact mic, on 05-Jun-2011.
