Hi,
Currently there's 37 results when searching for Lathe. Only 1 if I add wood.
So if you have access to a workshop, it would be cool to record sounds there
Perhaps if you could do a small item such as a pawn and record the full session that would be cool. But individual samples would be nice too.
Ideas are idle spin at different speeds, cutting, sanding. Maybe mic positioned focusing on the cutting and another a meter or so back capturing the entire lathe with motor and cutting etc...
A lathe motor mic sound would be cool too.
Ideas for tags pick and choose the relevant ones : Wood, metal, (maybe the kind of wood/metal used too?) cutting, turning spinning, spin, sanding, lathe, wood-turning metalworking metal-spinning machine workshop work-shop
Cheers!
That's a fantastic request, and your ideas for mic placement (close-up cutting vs. room tone motor) are spot-on!
I don't have access to a lathe right now, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for a wood shop. In the meantime, sometimes searching for related machine shop sounds like "milling machine" or "drill press" can give you some cool cutting/motor tones that might work as placeholder textures!
I don't have anything on Freesound for Lathe right now, but check this video I made. No close up mics per say, but genuine machining from 5 feet away. It is possible I have a bit more in the directories that makeup those shots:

Do pencil sharpeners count as a a machine tool that rotates a workpiece on an axis to perform operations like cutting, sanding, drilling, and threading, shaping symmetrical objects from materials like wood or metal; it's considered a fundamental "mother of all machine tools" used to create countless everyday items, from furniture to complex mechanical parts, by applying a stationary cutting tool to a spinning part. Key components include the headstock (spindle), tailstock, tool rest, and carriage, while important safety measures involve wearing eye/face protection and avoiding loose clothing. Or a lathe?
