Hi everybody,

I'm a new freesounder from Switzerland!

Could somebody give me an advice on how to organize the data (audio, plugins, samples) on the computer?
What do you keep on the main HD? What do you copy on the external HD? Is an external USB HD fast enough?

I don't use an external HD, myself. I orginize samples on my HD in one folder labelled "Samples." I then create several folders within this folder based on certain themes, such as "synth," "Accoustic strings," "drums," "vocal sounds," "sounds from nature," and so on. Each subfolder is then given another set of folders with more specific labels for each type of sound, such as "Juno," TB 303," "Moog," and so on. Then one last folder is created for the actual sounds, with such labels as "juno pad," "juno bass," "juno kick drum," and so on. Then the actual sounds are found. It's kind of like those dolls that you keep opening up and you keep seeing a smaller version of the doll inside until you hit the end.

When orginizing my plugins, I just keep it simple since I don't use very many. I put all of my effect in a folder labelled "effects." I create a few subfolders based on who created each effect, such as "Smartelectronix," or "Native Instruments." When orginizing synths, I just throw all of them into a "synth" folder and leave it at that.

if you have a HDD they are more useful for sharing or backing up. i do have my samples on my hdd, cos they are 18gb worth, but i think it would be ideal to have your samples like Harleguin suggested, just folders, but keep back ups on your External. And if you have friends with samples, whip round and share!!
