does anyone know of a freeware program with which you can layer mp3's and produce quality crossfades with invisible track markers in your final burn?
many thanks...

I don't know what you mean by "invisible track markers", but audacity can do all your basic multitrack waveform editing.

im using logic 7 express for my editing and compositional needs but if i put a finalized mp3 back into it i lose alot of the stereo definition so i dont know if things would be similar with audacity...
thanks for the reply.

Maybe try exporting as high-bitrate WAV instead of mp3?

are you exporting joint stereo? IN that case some stereo information is lost. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_stereo
