i'm new to field recording. I'd love to integrate some sounds that I can't reproduce in my studio. Therefore, I'm looking to purchase a unit for field recording. I'd like to pay no more than 200 dollars. What features should I consider? Any recommendations for affordable units? Any help would be greatly apprecaited

Hi!

You shold buy a camera!

I have an canon s2. It has a stereo condensator microphone and it sounds alot better than my minidisc with condensator mic. It records in wav files!

Try it!

I have an Iriver h320 with rockbox firmware it records as 16bit 44.1khz, I haven't tested it with a decent mic yet so I'm not sure about the preamp quality, but the line-in quality is fine.

I am eventually going to buy one of these suckers:

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack2496-main.html

It's not the cream of the crop, but it is descrete and it will more than get the job done.
And it is at a price point that isn't so bad.

I also have an iRiver which I use a lot at the moment as it size is great for stealth recording rather that the Fostex FR2. But it maybe out of your price range. If you want something quick and easy (and retro!) you could try a simple dictaphone or a minidisc recorded (but if you are going to spend that amount it is worth saving up and getting an iRiver or the Microtrack)

All the best
