I wanted to do a review video, didn't really know how to make a clean video nor got round to it... So a written thing shall be sufficient
You can find sounds with it here : https://freesound.org/browse/tags/?f=tag:%22dji-mic3%22#
Magnets attach well with and without the extra magnet clip. I find the sound quality good. Battery life is indeed about 7-8h. More like 6h on a cold night.
As individual recorders they're super practical to pull out of the box and start recording. Even without the box, there are vibrations / led to give indications so as a pocketable 16g recorder it's great.
Though I do wish there was a safer rec on/off button shortcut to be configured, currently it's one press and a press n hold to turn off or double press would have been really re-assuring! You can disable rec on/off via the button though. So it will only record via the receiver and being pulled in/out the box.
Leds and vibrations can be turned off. Good for more incognito mode.
As for syncing two mics together. I didn't find any luck with a internal time-code already done and a sync in Davinci resolve.... I don't think timecode is a always on feature, kind of have to turn it on for the project or something. I didn't look too much into it as i'd like to work with audacity and I'm not sure that accepts time-code, and working outside is an added inconvenience. So I didn't give it the best-shot to make time-code work for field-recording.
Good old clap works. I tried with turning rec on simultaneously with the receiver but I don't think it perfectly syncs them.
Files are separated every 30min, I would have liked a 1h / file but hey good enough. They are well named with date/time, so it's convenient there to find matching audio between two mics.
There's a loop mode, so when it's full it will delete the older files. With the 32gb internal I never met that should be 43h worth of recording according to DJI. I thought id use that to keep a backup on the mic but I found that confusing in the end and I delete after transfer.
The case is clean and holds everything and is pocketable. Charging time is quick.
Bluetooth connection to phones is easy. With the receiver in USB C too.
Though that's a bonus convenient feature outside field-recording as bluetooth audio has artefacts as you can hear here https://freesound.org/people/Sadiquecat/sounds/829751/
Connection to laptop wise, they shut-down after 3-5min or so and disconnect. I'm not a fan of that but when actually transferring I didn't get any issues.
Considering a Zoom H1e costs 100€ then you need to add batteries, sd card, wind-cover etc... I would recommend a single transmitter as a recording setup even if mono. For speech or drop recordings it's good!
Considering you can connect via bluetooth too it's a practical thing imo.
Though in general, I would recommend a Zoom H1 essential for the added stereo. Jack input, a one thing usb-c computer mic, longer battery life and bigger SD card potential. Though that would be a 180€ ish investment once you added accessories (Box + windcover, mini tripod/magic arm. SD card. AAA rechargeable batteries and charger.)
I won't comment the onboard processing as it's not relevant to field recording imo.
I didn't look too much at the competition, I know hollyland said to have good products too and cheaper. Rode does good stuff too although bigger and pricier (arguably better sound quality too even if marginal).
A few things that would make them better :
Weather proofing.
96khz internal recording.
Better syncing as standalone recorders.
Longer battery life. If it had over 12h it would be nice for drop recordings. Replace it once during the day to have a 24h record.
And of course a jack input and USB-C directly on the transmitter. Though given its size it's a fair compromise for my use. I never used a lav/mic input on my Rode Wireless Me.
Though with that device, I did use the USB-C for a direct microphone connection on my computer for prolonged gaming use.
I do wish they would make a "Mic-3 pro" TX module like the Mic-2's form factor. And / or make the mic 2 TX compatible with the mic 3. The fact they aren't somewhat inter-compatible when I think they easily could doesn't re-assure me on how DJI is anti-consumer friendly or not...
All in all I think it's a solid offering! A 100€ ultra compact / light standalone 32bit recorder with accessories included (windcover, and clip and magnetic clip, internal storage) with Bluetooth and possibly wireless transmission to a RX. I think it's a considerable option without a receiver and as a field recorder.
Cheers!
