Any sounds recorded with this mic here ?

I found this one smile
https://freesound.org/people/bmadore/sounds/718649/

It's outside my paygrade lol but It's a microphone I fantasise to own.
I'm curious of a shotgun mic for my field recording, and this one being stereo mid-side seems like a perfect thing.

Any thoughts on such a mic for field-recording? If you own one, have you recorded anything with it?

Cheers!

Hey Sadiquecat !
Some more recordings are available here :
https://freesound.org/search/?q=mkh418

In the MS shotgun category, you could also consider the Audio-technica bp4029 / at835ST, which appears to be a bit noisier than the mkh418s, but also cheaper and a bit smaller
Here are some recordings made with it :
https://freesound.org/search/?q=technica+%2Bbp4029
Otherwise, if you have the chance to get your hand on one of the MS mics made by Sanken, it migght be a very good alternative too, but quite expensive !

Also, I just think that you could have a look at the zoom SSh-6 capsule, compatible with your current h5.
Of course, surely not the quality of a mkh418s, but 10X cheaper... Maybe a good starting point to get an affordable MS mic ?
As a comparison, here are 2 recordings I made with the MSH-6e, which is the equivalent capsule on the new Zoom H6Essential series :

Wishing you all the best !

Hey thanks!

I wasn't aware of those other mic models, I'l defo check them out!
Looks like the at835ST can be found for 500€ ish second hand.

I had already searched, and found the same tag as the MKH 418 none S, there's few that come from the S version :/

The sanken looks neat, not that much more expensive than the MKH 418S, well when we're at those price ranges anyway...

I had totally forgotten about the H5's capsule changes! True!
Before buying a big gun, I'l probably try and get a second hand SSH-6 !!!!
That's actually a very interesting option to try things out grin
IMO, your recordings sounds good!

TY!

Thanks !
Yes, this is exactly why I decided to get the shotgun ms capsule for my H6essential. I thought MS recording might be interesting in some situations, and I wanted to try without spending too much money.
Of course, it’s not the quality of a MKH418s or BP4029, but still very decent for the price.
Also the good thing is that these Zoom capsules come with a stock furry windscreen, so that you don’t have to spend additional bucks for that. As you can guess, it’s not the best windscreen ever, but it still does a decent job with moderate wind ! wink

Wishing you all the best !

Kevin
