Can I ask for opinions on the following;
I want to improve the quality of sound in my recording and lose some of the self noise from my Edirol R-09hr. Would you 1. add a fel preamp (about £127) to the existing set-up or 2. purchase a second hand sony pcm D50 (maybe £250?) and rely on the better quality preamps that it contains. Mmmm?
Thanks guys.

It all depends on the mics you'll be using. If you keep using the Sony ECMMS907 you may well save the money, because most of the noise you have now is self-noise from the mic, not the Edirol. So inserting a preamp inbetween recorder and mic will give you more signal, yes, but also amplified self-noise from the mic. My own light rig consists of an oldish PCM-M10 and a Fel preamp, but with external mic capsules which are both quiet, sensitive... and very cheap, the Primo EM172.

If you plan getting phantom-powered mics in the near future the answer is very simple: get the Fostex

Lastly, if you are reluctant to invest in larger/expensive mics (which I can easily understand because they are a PITA) you best bet is to purchase an used pcm D50...if you are lucky enough to locate one.

Hope this helps
D

EDIT: and by the way, i addition to preamps, Fel has Primo capsules at a ridiculously low price

Thanks Dobroide, It looks like I could start spending a lot of money so I'm going to take the EM172 route for now and make the most of the kit I already have. Primo ordered!
