There are apps which allow one to hand-draw a waveform ... https://stevehanov.ca/blog/?id=13
But I'm looking for something which will convert an image into a waveform,
e.g. a screengrab of an oscilloscope trace ...

Or the Freesound logo ...

Boy, there sure are a lot of wrong answers on this topic to find.

Looks like this got solved with a python script in https://blenderartists.org/t/how-do-i-convert-an-image-of-a-wave-into-a-sound-file/1470442/12

One would probably have to aid the process by converting the image to 2 bit black & white (GIMP level and convert to indexed image might help)
