I have a little Sony mono digital recorder. I like it because it has a retractable USB connector that slides out. What is a good handheld digital recorder to get to move up with sound quality?

You can look into Zoom H1N. It's a nifty little recorder with great sound. If you want to do field recording or handheld recording, you may need a shockmount and a windscreen though.
