Well there are so many plugs out there it's hard to advise you without knowing what sort of music/sound you're into. One of the best and versatile soft synths on this planet is definitely Reaktor 5 by Native Instruments. Well it's more than a synth it's actually whole universe of synths, sequencers, grain delays, beatboxes, beatmanglers, effects, processors and you can build your own ensembles with it, so only the sky is the limit. The user library provides more than 2000 ensembles right now (free downloads) and the Reaktor community is great. So read about it, get the demo, listen to some stuff, you'll be fascinated.
