Hi there,

I have a few sound effects that I have recorded for an open source game project and am about to upload them to FTP and freesound.

My question is how do I go about copyrighting the sounds so that someone who has stumbled upon the FTP directory cannot just download the files and claim them as their own work?

I was thinking if I upload them to freesound then at least there would be proof that I recorded and uploaded them on a certain date! lol

Is there anything else I can do to protect my work?
thanks

A legally sure way of copyrighting sounds is to post them to yourself via registered mail....
Then DON'T open the package. Just keep it.
if anything ever comes up in court you will be sure the dates are verifyable
Although with medern computer dating systems it is unlikely to ever get this far, the day of reel to reel is over.............

Posting them here is a great idea. However I wouldnt bother with too much trouble because sound effects are virtually impossible to enforce the copyright on. Someone can change it very very slightly and it could be considered something new. If that happens, the only thing to do (unless you wanna burn a lot of oil in legal costs) is just enjoy that others think your work is nice enough to steal smile

thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I'll just go ahead and upload them here once I've processed them all and I'll also be given credits in the games they're to be used in.

thanks

Not according to the US Copyright Office. From their FAQ:

I’ve heard about a “poor man’s copyright.” What is it?
The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a “poor man’s copyright.” There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration.
