Hello,
I'm a hobbyist game developer, and I would like to know if it's all right to use freesounds in my game projects. I do put up my games for download on my website, with their sounds included, but at this time I am not selling them in any way. I ask mostly because I am not planning to modify the sounds in any way, but rather, to simply use them in exactly the form I download them in. Is this allowed? If so, how do I properly credit the authors? Is it acceptable to credit them in a TXT file included with the game?

Yes, that would be acceptable, as long as it is equivalent to other credits. (So maybe have them at the bottom of the file where you credit yourself and/or your team, or in a similarly accessible location.)

In specific, the Sampling+ license, which you will be using the samples under. The commons deed provides an easy summary of your privileges, and the terms under which you may use the samples:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/

This license has no restrictions on commercial vs. non-commercial usage, as long as the samples are not used to advertise anything other than the work you are creating with it. (So you can use them to sell your game, but not a third, unrelated product.)

I think PlanPerson's fear is the "whole work" clause in Sampling+. Don't worry, as we read it (although we are not lawyers), if you use the sample as a "minor part" of your creation, it should be a problem. This clause has been giving us severe headaches and is the main reason why I will be trying to convince people to switch over to a new license soon...

Would it be all right to have a message in the credits that says something like, "Some sounds from Freesound Project, see soundcredits.txt for more information." ?

Hi guys, I'm new posting here - great site and superb collection of sounds.

This particular thread caught my eye because I'm due to release shortly a golf course I have created for the PC game "Links 2003". I have downloaded sounds from this site for use within the golf course. I have acknowledged the source of these sounds on the Splash screen (basically the screen that players see as the course loads). I will also be individually acknowledging the author of each sound within the readm.txt that will be attached to the course file.

The question I have is: This is a real course re-creation. It is released free of charge in accordance with the Microsoft EULA and I have no affiliation with the Golf Club. Does this mean I am allowed to release the course file with those sounds attached or would I be best to get express permission from each of the individuals who uploaded the sounds that I have used?

As long as you attribute the sounds like you say, it should be fine.

Thanks for the reply, Halleck. This is how I'm acknowledging on the splash screen (bottom right), and the readme will list the individuals, as I mentioned.
