how do I find a specific sample, sample pack or author? like "12231__samulis__orchestral-chimes-samples" pack or "192625__samulis__chimes-f-3-ff-1" or samulis a freesound contributor? i've typed these in the search field and nothing.
Hey. Good question. Sorry but this is going to be quite long-winded because I can't think of a simpler way to give explain how this works..
So I think you're running into trouble because it looks like the user samulis has change their username to sgossner.
The search won't recognise the change and as a result won't link the two, but if you want to find a specific user account regardless of username changes you can use the address bar to enter the URL i.e. freesound.org/people/samulis
which will redirect you to the new profile page if there's been a username change.

For sounds, using the downloaded file name exactly won't work in a search because it's not how it originally appears on Freesound so it might throw off the results. Take the last part (the title) and throw it in the search i.e. "chimes-f-3-ff-1", the top result should be the sound you're looking for. But you'll also get more results underneath that are irrelevant...
Alternatively to find specific sounds without relying on searching you can use the ID number from the file name in the search and it will give you the exact match only (192625). Or you can use the following short URL address and put the ID at the end freesound.org/s/192625

I was going to recommend using advanced search to locate this pack, but I just realised whilst looking at this for you, pack search is actually broken and won't return results when using the advanced search with "pack name" checked. I've written a ticket for this to get fixed at some point.
However, just like with the username redirect, using the URL to fetch the page will work. You can use the old information for this, https://freesound.org/people/samulis/packs/12231/ notice the ID at the end is the pack ID number from the zip file you downloaded. This will take you to the right place even if the username has changed.
I hope this explanation wasn't too complicated
Best,
Sam
I too have been wondering why exact file name searches turn up nothing. I feel it happens even if the file name has not changed. For instance, I recently remixed one of Josefpres new uploads and as i submitted the new sample I could not locate the file that I wanted to reference, so I just opted for using another one of their file names. But again, I cant even search my own files by name , and I do not change their names nor have I changed my user name. Seems to be a pretty big bug.
PS - we love freesound and dont take our complaints as a reflection of anything otherwise <3

Yeah I know, search has its teething problems since the updated website. But, rest assured a lot of these issues are known about and are being worked on when the developers have time.
I'm not a member of staff at Freesound so I don't mind about complaints at all, it's all valid to me. Besides, even the developers of the site appreciate the feedback. They're always looking to improve the site for everyone, but it is a very small team of people with a lot of work to be done. There's literally hundreds of old bugs to fix and new features to implement, it's hard to prioritise.
