I have a sound that’s been downloaded over 74,000 times to date (https://freesound.org/people/DCPoke/sounds/387978/#). I am wondering how this compares to the most downloaded sounds.

This is easy to find out. smile

I just ran a search by leaving the search box blank and it will give you the entire database and you can then sort how you want.

https://freesound.org/search/?q=&f=&s=num_downloads+desc&advanced=0&g=1

According to the results you are #15 which is at the bottom of the first page, so i'd say it's doing pretty well indeed!

This search will also let you see exactly how many sounds are in the database that are active (not in limbo with processing errors, moderation pending etc). The total number of sounds ever uploaded, including deleted, is about 540633. You can see this by looking at the ID of the most recently uploaded sound in it's URL.

Excuse the verbose reply, I thought you might find it interesting!

How can I search all the remixes of my sounds and exclude myself from the search results.

Hmmm, good question

I guess if you search for your username and then in advanced check "description" and "file names" it will exclude you from the results. Unless you've put your own username in the description of a sound, which I would imagine is not the case. tongue

This does require the remixer to state your username though, which I guess the majority would do.

Thanks, seems to have worked somewhat.
Half the search results has my sounds listed when using your suggested search criteria.
However, the reason I ask this is because when I search my name in the wide sound search, no exclusions just my name. It lists 100 more sounds than what I uploaded personally: 4115 sounds to be exact.. Leaving me to believe that 96 of them are remixes that are mostly by Timbre and a few others. I was just curious and thanks for the info.

Thanks. That was interesting. I have no clue why this particular sound is so popular. I’ve posted around 10 recordings of birds singing in my backyard, none of which have been downloaded nearly as much as Singing Birds 03.

What people find depends on how they search. If they search-order by most downloads yours will be near the top of the list. Many are obviously very happy when they hear it and don't spend time looking further.

Maybe because of the viewer effect, when I search for audio I only listen to the sounds that popular

It could also be the fact that in this day and age, we are all quite impatient on the internet, so we tend to only look at the surface of what's presented to us. Or only dig as deep as necessary to get what we want. Settling for the thing that is most obvious, but not necessarily the absolute best fit.

Just a thought smile
