I'm going to upload seven samples from the notes of a pelog demung, which I guess should be a sample pack. Should I make a subdirectory when I upload them? Anything else I should know about sample packs? Naming conventions?

You don't have to create a directory when uploading but you can. There are no naming conventions. Just make sure the name you use makes sense...

first upload the sounds. After you're done uploading go to Describe uploaded files: http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/filesUploadedBrowse.php
There you can select your samples which you want to assign to a pack.
Click the link under 'Your uploaded files...' to select or create a new pack for the samples.

You can also assign you samples one by one to a pack later. Just look up your sample on the site and you will see a link "assign sample to pack or change sample pack" on the top. That's where you can create a new pack or add the sample to an existing pack.

Hmm. I can't get past the spellchecker! It's thrown up all these corrections to words which are actually correct! Here's the text to one of my descriptions;

and here's the error message when I try to carry one without correcting;

cannot run mysql query: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'd'' at line 1
Query:

SELECT wordlist.ignore FROM wordlist WHERE word = ''d'

Error No.: 1064

ted,

I'm sorry for the trouble!

I deleted the database entries and hopefully fixed the bug...

here's your file description if you would like to add the samples again (the group hasn't been deleted so you can re-use it)

Sample of a demung key from an iron gamelan. Basic mic, some compression, should really have shortened the tail a bit. The note is pelog 1, approximately a 'D'

BTW, don't forget to set keywords / tags for your samples!

Yay, it works now! Who knows how often I'll be able to find time to do stuff like this, but... I'm going to tell my students about it, they have got a sampling project this term, I'll see if I can encourage some of them to put some stuff up. (One of them already has a totally mad selection of sounds she made by firing elastic bands at the back of an acoustic guitar...)

kewl,

im busy on a project to sample 2 entire gamelan orchestra's. One Pelog and one slendro. They will also be available thru creative commons, maybe even on here, not sure about that yet.
