The place for discussions, comments, rants, complaints and philosophical discussions about dare-31

Interesting.... I am up for it but still deciding what my signature sound will be.

So.... part one of this dare is already open? Choose a signature sound and create a musical piece to introduce it? (Just needed to clarify that for meself thanks)
Jan 31st is a good long deadline, especially for this busy time of year.

Nice one grin

Yep... Part 1 of 3 of the Signature Sound Mega-Dare is already open.

You have got to 31st Jan to pick a signature sound (does not need to be a sound from Freesound) and compose the first piece containing this sound.

The signature sound does not neet to be exactly the same sound.
- For example, you could decide that your pieces will contain the sound of a train. You would post your track and say "my signature sound is the sound of a train, as heard on this track at 1m33s"
Next time you can use a different train sound... but it must be a train, not a boat or a car.
- Another example. Say that you have a fantastic effects chain that sounds great on drums. You could say "My signature sound is the effects chain used to process the drums, as heard throughout the track." Next time, you don't need to use the same drums or rhythms, but must use the same effect. It has to be recognizeable.

If anyone has other ideas and unsure if they qualify they can always ask.

Of course, the point of being a signature sound is that it should be a distinctive sound. So a synth patch that you have created or a strange effect chain for your drums are better choices than the sound of a train (anyone can record a train, and there are dozens of train samples on Freesound).
Also, if choosing effects... Just applying a chorus effect to the snare or the guitar might not be very "distinctive"... Anyone can do that...
If you said "I recorded the drum parts from my DAW to cassette, then I recorded them played by my old boombox in my bathroom and re-imported into my DAW." - That would be a far better signature sound: no one else has your boombox and your bathroom, so they won't be able to replicate that easily.

Hope the silly examples helped smile

I want to believe.

Status report
I have chosen my signature sound.
https://www.freesound.org/people/gis_sweden/sounds/256742/
You can read about it in the description. Also I have made some recordings. My middle son (his 12) plays the cello. His school orchestra had a concert at the end of the term. It was held in the library. The library’s acoustics is a catastrophe! I will use this recording. I have been looking/listening at some sounds from this site (for percussion-ish) and I will use uFXloops. I don’t know where this will lead, but I think some quiet dark stuff will emerge (they played Game of Thrones theme song) . I’m not a big fan of dark music but sometimes the samples take you there…
I will use uFXloops and I want uFXloops to work like autopiano… So I have to make a plan for the loop length to create variations. And I have to know when you can start a sample in relation to another. So there will be a start up phase before the piano is going by it self.

I would be really, really interested in finding out how you would use this in a musical piece. Now that you've got your signature sound, you're going to start working on a musical piece for this dare, or are you going to skip this one?

smile I will use it! So far I just have a blurry picture of how it all will come together. It might end in disaster...

Considering how committed and productive you were on the "support the developers" dare, I cannot imagine that being possible.

However, you did stick your neck out and took a chance that you were not required to.
The rules of the dare don't require people to tell us what their signature sound is before they post their first entry.

In any case, I suspect you have a few ideas already. By the time I write this, you are probably on your way to create something already.

I want to believe.

Dare-31 submission status report #2
So I’ve got my Signature Sound. I have extracted sounds from my youth orchestra recording. I’ve made rhythmic loops… The latest made from a recording of a jalousie flapping in a window at a library. It made an irresistible sound (soon uploaded to freesound). So I recorded it with my mobile. First I planned to add some Sunrize synth sounds but… no. Tomorrow I start the work with importing the sound to uFXloops. 15 sounds – so far. The samples haven’t played together yet. They will meet for the first time in uFXloops. A little exciting.
Christmas, end of term activities, wife birthday, work… I’m glad I have uFXloop. Gives a possibility to “sneak arrange”. #CreativeSwenglish
Cheers

Hi everyone
Posting here since the main thread should be for entries only.

Who else is not surprised that gis_sweden was the first to post an entry to the "Signature Sound" dare?

I want to believe.

For a while, I had an idea – to not be the first. But I let that idea fly away. I’m ready and want to move on. The 31th of January I have forgot this track...
My theory is that your use all these fancy programs that gives you to many options, to many nobs to alter and parameters to tweak wink

I am not surprised that gis_sweden is finished before I even start!! LoL I'm sorry I tend to move at a different pace to the rest of the world and very busy time of year.

@gis_sweden Great track! Really unique atmosphere...like a cross between a club and a church but understated and very cool. Quite a fitting vibe for new year too.

I'm going to use the didgeridoo as my signature sound. It's probably my favourite instrument to listen to as it's so primal and unique. I can't actually play the didge very well, but I did record my friend a while ago.

I imagine you could do a lot of interesting things with the sounds produced by this instrument so I look forward to experimenting with it smile

Hi folks,

great to read some lines of you.
There is also some news, for ufxloops fans. Version 1.20 is out, a milestone release that has a lot of features including effects and automation, shuffle mode and a ton more.
The new Demo completely made and included with uFXloops is here:

https://soundcloud.com/ufxloops/living-on-mars

I called it living on mars because of the sound and my own feelings when I developed this. wink
A great year 2015 and a lot of fun to all of you. I will now listen to some tracks, gis_sweden is really ahead of time again smile

Greetings
Andreas

@ufxloops

Excellent timing!

Work on my submission for the current dare is well underway.
We are supposed to use the same sound for the next 2 dares as well (so, in total 3 compositions featuring the same sound)
To keep things fresh I was intending to go back to ufxloops for my second composition. Take sounds and cut them up, rearrange, etc, then re-sequence them in ufxloops. - Different tool often means different results...

The fact that ufxloops now comes with its own effects and automation is PERFECT TIMING!

Will get into this as soon as I finish the current dare.
Thanks Andreas!

I want to believe.

Great athmosphere. The mix between the instruments works very nice.

AlienXXX
I track with a low profile that honors the unexpected. The first 25 seconds you think you get it. Then things happen.

Escortmarius
We, the humans, are really a sad collection. Peace is not our best subject. The track is cohesive and well performed. Hard to listen to without being colored by the echo of Selassies words

Conclusion
OK the hidden theme of this Dare (dare-31) was ancient history. The didgeridoo is old, the jew harp is older, war is very old sad And I used the sound of stones in my track. Stones are usually old (even if my stones where “digital stones”).
