I know that the answer to this is probably "yes".

I would like to use some free sounds from this website for a Facebook App which I am developing.
My question is - do I have to reference the uploader that put the sound on freesound.org in the credits?

Thanks
BassthatGuy

The question belongs to a different forum: Legal "help" and attribution questions.
http://www.freesound.org/forum/legal-help-and-attribution-questions/

Not trying to be snarky at all (maybe even a little curious behind the question), but why would you not want to credit where you get your resources from?

Thanks for the answers. When you asked your question, did you consider that you might get a serious response?
Not trying to be snarky at all, however I didn't say what I want so don't assume that I want to not credit my resources.
Why would I create this thread if I wasn't interested in giving credit in some form?
Why would you ask a question in response to a question unless it has some philosophical impact or greater meaning?

Thanks,
BassthatGuy

It depends. Public Domain samples don't need attribution, credit etc. It's entirely your choice if you wish to do so.

On each sample page, below the download button, is the CC license that the sample has been released under.
This text is a link and if you click on it takes you to a page with the detailed terms of the license.
Most licenses require attribution, i.e. credit to be given to the creator. But some licenses don't.
So you can check the terms that apply to any samples you have used or are interested in using.

Hope this helps.

I want to believe.

haha, bass guy, don't get me wrong. If you were interested in giving attribution, you would have simply done so, and so i felt the need for the question meant that you were placed in a situation that you wouldn't be able to atribute even if you wanted to do that. But alienxxx has your answer. smile

I haven't published anything yet and you are out of your league to say what my intentions are

You would be surprised how often the question "how do i give attribution" comes up.
Every project is different, and in some cases it is genuinely difficult to give attribution: imagine you take some thunder and rain sounds from Freesound to use as sound effects on a school theatre play... There is no credits page. How do you give attribution? If you use a lot of samples in a small movie, listing individual samples in the credits would make the credits longer than the movie itself.

Perhaps most important, if we want to comply with individual sample licenses, some cc licenses exclude the use for commercial purposes, which has a complicated set of rules in itself and often users ask for clarification.

People who really don't want to give attribution don't bother asking. So we should be civil and helpfull in our answers.

I want to believe.

I thought I had set the record straight. Now this does not help, does it?
Please lets stop the insult exchange and just continue with a productive discussion on any attribution questions or issues that remain. OK?

Thanks

I want to believe.

No harm done, I think. And I know your comment was intended as a friendly joke.
I think we sort of got off a bit on the wrong foot here.
People who bother to ask attribution questions should be helped and encouraged.

If we know the answer to any particular question we should not assume it is obvious to others.
In fact, we know the answer probably because we asked that same question before smile
So lets just share the love, share the knowledge and share the samples.

There is no point getting upset about any of this.

I want to believe.

FAQ, sir! Sticky FAQ in the Legal Help forum pertinent to this question (and all variations thereof).
I think I am going to be a man on a mission, AlienXXX. I will pm you about this.
