This was just too interesting to let it pass. Consider yourself Dared!

Hi all,

After a long search on the internet I came to this place. Hope one of you can help me out.

I am the mother of 2 autistic children, who are both intelligent and go to regular schools.

Next week (october fifth) I will be giving a lecture about autism for all the teachers my son has to deal with this year. He's sixteen and will be doing exams this year. It's taken me four years to get permission to do this.

I have only 20 minutes to make the teachers understand what my son is dealing with every day. One of his problems is that he hears all sounds on the same soundlevel, so the buzzing of a fly, a zipper, a clicking pen, streetworkers outside the school, teacher in the next class, scribbling of a pen, shuffling of feet, broken and buzzing light-tube and the teachers voice all sound equally loud and all compete for the first prize, so to say.

I am looking for a short soundfragment (app. 1.5 minutes) which I can use during this lecture that contains most of the noises I mentioned above, or is similar to what I want to demonstrate: all the noises drowning the one voice of the teacher. I want the teachers to understand the amount of energy that goes into blocking the (loud) background noises and to keep on listening.

If you can help me out, or if there is already a file somewhere that I might be able to use, please let me know!

The lecture is on October 5, next Thursday!

There is a list of possible samples, selected by her son, on the other topic, i am posting them here:

This is really useful! I told my son about this and he's pleased with it, although he's like awww mommmm.... Anyway, he was here right now, and I had him listen to all the sounds, here are the ones he picked out as very realistic. He added a couple, namely chalk on blackboard and the sound of mopeds.

Fly

Zipper:

clicking pen:

chalk on board:

keys on a chain:

pen scribbling:

scratching or tearing paper:

mopeds:

shuffling and creaking:

someone climbing stairs

http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=19962
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/samplesViewSingle.php?id=18744

opening a creaking door

rolling office chair:

The school is at a quiet place, but is being renovated, so sounds of working men can be included, but the streetsounds are not really realistic for this setting.

Great thinking this, have to say I'm amazed by all of this. Here I am, living in Holland, doing the best I can... grasping at straws sometimes. Trying one last thing, and here you all are, thinking with me!
