Message problems?

I think there is a problem with the message system. When I logged on I had 4 messages although none had been notified by email. In fact the 4 messages were actually 4 copies of the same message. When I tried to reply to a different message I got the following error message; Could not connect to smtp host: 111: connection refused/DEBUG MODE/ Line; 112 File smtp.php. In my usual non-tech dumb way I ignored it and tried another 3 times to send the message and got the same error each time. I then looked in Outbox to find that all 4 copies were there. Help please?
