First up: Attachment of photos to submissions

I know the Flickr thing is possible, but it would be even simpler if .jpg attachments were allowed to document the location of a field-recording. (Or a document of the subject itself in a non-field recording). .jpg images are very small compared to the audio portion of the submission. Also, I don't know if others have noticed, but Flickr isn't working as smoothly as it used to, and being a seperate site and all puts attachments at jeopardy should the site ever fold. I find this feature to be as important, and possible more-so than the Geotag feature (Which I use religiously), however I do understand that integrating with Google Maps is perhaps easier than adding native image support.

I often either photograph or draw the mic placement and envrionment layout of a given recording. I usually scan these to digital and store alongside the audio files. Some geeks like me are very interested in seeing the microphone placement while listening to the results.

Anyway, this is just a humble request and an attempt to provoke discussion. I have other suggestions, but I promise to keep them reasonable and realistic.

Indeed. It's also a great place for people interested in recording audio.

The main issues I have with it, is that it's heavily focussed on recording concerts. So the recording levels are usually orders of magnitude higher than people get recording stuff here. This affects the recommended gear and mics you see suggested.

...so you post a pic of a horse, you could have at least found one relevant to FreeSound!

On second thoughts - Isn't the request for images as simple as allowing people to link in a pic to the description like we can here?

Its not a clear picture I know, but here is one of my involvements. I assisted with an experiment in stereo microphone techniques. You can't quite see all the scenarios at hand here. Most of those shown here are owned by University of Victoria. The gentleman who was performing all this set up these patterns simultaneously: Coincident XY, AB, ORTF and Crown SASS. I brought enough gear to add Blumlien array and Mid-Side to the picture. The environment was one of the Studio rooms at the University music hall which was large but sounded real nice. A couple of master flamenco/classical guitar players were the subject. If I post them online somewhere I will provide a link for those interested, as I am aware of Freesound policy.

(I sometimes wish Freesound would setup a 'music section' for DIY recordings such as this which was not so much performance but recording experiment; However, I know it would get abused immediately, probably by ME!)

That will certainly work in the meantime, and is probably good practice in any case where a photo is useful information. Even easier would be that the file does not have to be hosted offsite, and the photo was either visible right away (in expandable thumbnail form), or at least an obvious link that will open it. I like the idea of it being small and visible right on the description page for that sound and clickable to expand in cases where thats needed. (Much like how images in the forum works)

The key is to not necessarily require Flickr or your own hosting abilities to make the feature work. Even though we have no problems finding a place to stash stuff, its not a universal ability. Also free hosting sites can drop off the Internet without a trace, leaving all the links one has entered dead. More secure would be that the photo become an integral part of the record within Freesound, but I know that it will take some work, so I'm prepared to start with your method.
