( acclivity: although I understand your comments, I don't want to turn freesound into too much of a "I'm the best around here" thing. Any single rating of "quality" is so subjective and it's so difficult. Perhaps I'll add some more statistics to the user-page, but still, gotta be careful about this! )

... users join FS, grab what they need at the time, and disappear without trace. Why can't we hold on to more users for longer? Why don't they come back again and again for new stuff?

Users don't need to have a long-term 'relationship' with sound, their interest/curiosity could be momentary (e.g., students). Fortunately some catch on for longer!
