Binaural recording of a freight train passing from right to left, decelerating as it comes into town. The mic is about 20 feet from the tracks. This was my first attempt at recording a train with my mic setup and I obviously need to pull the gain down a bit. But I thought I would throw this up into cyberspace anyway, perhaps there is some segment of this that someone might be able to use. I go to this spot once a month for a meeting, so I will try it again next month.

wow! doesn't look very portable, but undoubtedly effective. Would be a hard time to explain this to the police or any curious passer by, though. Thanks for the pictures!

Last night was my monthly meeting at this location so I made another recording which I will post soon if it turned out OK.
Here are some photos of my home-made fake head for binaural recording:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3516/3199329655_e8dd5d63ed_b.jpg - You cannot see the railroad tracks, but you can see the crossing sign.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3401/3200175490_d047450f71_b.jpg - The "head" is made from a piece of carpet pad wrapped up, with lots of scrap fishing net wrapped around it. It weighs about 8 pounds. The stake goes up inside the carpet pad. In the backpack is the rest of the recording chain - Sound Professionals binaural mics->Sound Professionals amp->Sony Digital8 camcorder.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3398/3200175822_2e82152747_b.jpg - The train tracks are just out of sight in the darkness. I'll have to get some photos during the daylight sometime.

nice sound with lots of detail, thank you. What stuff did you use to record this? (specifically, any external preamp?). Also, it would be nice to see a picture of the setup, when/if you try again...
