Calm spring morning on the Amer River in the Netherlands.
Behind me on the river embankment the sheep walk and bleat.
On this lucky day the recording starts immediately with a red list bird; the Common Redshank. Unfortunately not that common in our country. Furthermore, the Coot, the Black-headed Gull, the Canada Goose, the Gray Heron and high in the trees the Great Tit that whistles like an old bicycle pump.
View on busy Amer river with in the distance waters named ‘Zuidergat van den Visschen’ and ‘Noordergat van den Visschen’. Boerenplaat is an island you see at the other side of the Amer river. As you can see the waves of the ships are broken the stone breakwaters that run 30 meters from the side in the longitudinal direction of the river. The reeds, plants and trees act as second breakwaters. Ultimately, the dike I sit on is the protection against high water in the delta. The last flood disaster of 1953 killed 1,836 people. The evacuation involved 72,000 people. 47,000 cattle and 140,000 poultry drowned.
