Unfortunately this was also too close I think, if your recorder has a line out for monitoring, than wearing headphones and doing some test runs could help, along with a pop filter and shock mount if you can swing it, but either way it's appreciated, and from my small amount of experience, it's quite hard even with monitoring. The multiple takes really help with that, and I think it's actually to have the extras, so that people more skilled with cleanup may be able to salvage them.
