sometimes the trick is moderation. I created this

by loading it in Paintshop pro and applying image processing (see original file for details).

Despite the fact my file was popular, I myself found the sound too abrasive and harsh to be musically useful.

I used a reverse gate with side input from the unprocessed sound to gate the harsh processed version before mixing.
This causes the harsh version to be silent when the volume of the original sound is above a certain threshold - So the drum hits are nearly the pure original sound and the harsh processed sound appears only as a sustain tail.
Interesting effect.
