This sound is partly synthetic (the metallic footsteps) and partly recorded (the shaking ladder). In a mono track, I generated a Risset drum (375 Hz, duration : 2s) and added a fade-out effect. With a reverb, I aimed at creating a cavernous echo. This was my basis for the footsteps. Once I was satisfied with the first sample, I duplicated it in a second mono track. I wanted to have two separate tracks, one corresponding to the left foot and the other to the right. Thus, I slightly edited the panoramics to get a stereo-ish result. I duplicated each sound a couple more times until getting the impression that someone was actually climbing stairs.
In order to make it sound more realistic, I recorded myself while shaking a metal stepladder and descending it, before applying a noise-reduction effect.
