Here's an explosion sound created with Vitalium (open-source version of Vital synthesizer plug-in) and a firecracker recording.
All was done inside Ardour 6.9 on Arch Linux.
A full making-of/tutorial on how this sound was made is coming up on my YouTube channel.

I thought the same thing, though to be fair if you listen to HD combat footage in urban environments, this does make a pretty good facsimile of a grenade going off in the distance, as the buildings really make it sound different. Agreed about the sniper thing though, this would be pretty awesome for that.

I've never heard a real grenade explosion IRL, but this seems to lack the *kick* I usually notice in several footages (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4OjtmNr_uo), probably due to the size of the source material. IMHO it sounds more similarly to a fire from a sniper rifle.
Nice Ardour version BTW.
