One of my photo students wanted to photograph the people voting in the previous Presidential election at her local polling place - a small-town firehouse in rural SW Ohio. The assignment theme was "Important to Me". She was told she couldn't take photos because of voting privacy issues. Furthermore, she was not allowed to photograph anywhere inside the firehouse. Eventually, they told her she could take photos from the street in see in through the door. I shook my head in utter amazement at this conflict - free to vote but not free to document. True story. At least we have your sound recordings, eh?

Perfect example of how context adds meaning - simple sounds if you do not know the context but in reality the culmination of centuries of historic/political process congelaing into individual acts of power.
