Rory is a native Californian. He was born in Burbank, California in July 1947. He attended Saint Charles parochial school and enlisted in the US Navy in 1966 following graduation from North Hollywood High School. He served in the US Navy and was wounded in Vietnam in 1973. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the Navy and was trained for and served on Submarines, support vessels, new ship construction and Destroyers until 1974 when he was honorably discharged. In 1974 he took a temporary job at NBC at the insistence of his cousin while waiting for the college term to start, but within 2 months he was promoted to the head of building services where he remained for 2 years. In 1976 he obtained his first class FCC license and his bachelors degree in electronics from College of the Canyons, a requirement to become a broadcast engineer and enabling him to work on the various entertainment shows produced by NBC. Subsequently he worked on “Laugh-In”, “The Gong Show”, “Sanford and Son”, “Chico and the Man”, “The Midnight Special” and dozens of others including “The Tonight Show”. In 1981 he became part of the elite “Tonight Show” staff and remained on the show until Johnny Carson retired in 1991. At that time Rory “retired” also, to London where he worked for the BBC as a Documentary Producer, traveling, living and working on 5 different continents. He has written and created over a dozen shows in his career and has been recognized with 14 Emmy nominations, resulting in 6 Emmys. While working on “Last Call” with Carson Daly in 2006 he was asked to be part of an on-air skit, and has been a very successful working actor since that time.
