recording a very close flyby of a Blackhawk Helicopter. I was try to record lake noises and could not get to my preamp control fast enough to turn it down to avoid distortion.

Great job! Gain attenuation is a professional manner.
Anyway, how noisy the chopper is! While there isn't any distortion in the wave form, the gigantic noise seems to have rocked mic's diaphragm itself.
