There is no sound without a medium through which it travels. The space a sound travels through is just as important to the nature of a given sound as the sound itself. Or perhaps it would be more exact to say that sound is the space it travels through, that its identity is its mediating context, which is constitutive of it. To ascertain the nature of a particular sound, then, one must understand the nature of the medium a given sound travels through. To understand the content, one must understand the container.
