Well, I went for it, and after much deliberation, opted for the Roland R-07. Didn't want something too big like the Zoom H4n Pro, slow to boot, four batteries etc. No more Tascam mics. Really pleased I bought this device. For me this surpasses the quality of my old Sony M10, in both sound stage and noise floor. No more dropouts from pressure waves when closing and opening doors within my apartment.
These were recorded at 75 gain level, amplified where stated (unless I forgot to mention). No noise reduction, post.
Truely inspiring device, with very little to do in post and puts the fun and confidence back into recording. Comes with a 15Gb card, but a bit slow at tranferring to PC, <2Mbps, perhaps a better micro SD would increase the speed. Don't really care.
The sound. I love it! Warm, but not too much. Very sensitive mics that accept a fair amount of pressure without distortion. Natural separation. Overall, almost as good as my ears. The recorded sound sounds better than the monitored sound, depends upon headphones. I was just using decent quality ear-buds.
This is a real step up from my Tascam DR-05X, and, dare I say, better than my old - deceased - Sony M10. The R7 is in my living room right now recording the fireworks.
These test recordings were made at 75% gain, unless otherwise stated - with amplification.
You will not get better than this at sub £188, reduced price, maybe the Zoom. Bargain! Now I just want to record, record, record.
