Description:
It’s autumn, and the leaves and tree fruits are falling from the trees. Here in Boswachterij Dorst in the Netherlands, people are strolling and chatting, enjoying the surroundings. At this time of year, there are few birds singing. Trumpeter Shane far away plays a melody on his trumpet that comes to him, inspired by the environment. At the end, the birds applaud in their own way.

Shane is from America and is currently studying at Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Despite his busy schedule, he tries to make time to do field recordings together. For me, our collaboration is a great example of what Freesound can bring to the community.

This serene photograph captures a forest trail in Boswachterij Dorst during the heart of autumn. The path is blanketed with fallen leaves, creating a warm, earthy carpet that winds through dense woodland. Trees on either side display a mix of green and golden-yellow foliage, hinting at the seasonal transition. Boswachterij Dorst is a forested area covering 1,117 hectares, located east of Breda in the Netherlands.
Originally, the region was known as an expansive heathland with drifting sand dunes. In the early 19th century, the land was planted with Scots pine as part of an initiative to control sand drift and make the barren landscape more productive.

Around 1850, much of the young forest was cleared when the area was repurposed as a military training ground. Continuous exercises led to renewed sand drifts, and villages like Seters had to protect themselves from encroaching sand using oak coppice hedgerows.

In 1899, the area came under the management of Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission). From then on, it was replanted—mainly with pine trees—and officially named Boswachterij Dorst. For many years, forest management focused on timber production, but today the emphasis is on nature conservation and recreation.

The so-called clay pits in the forest are remnants of former brick factories in the villages Dorst and Rijen.” Clay was extracted here for the production of bricks and roof tiles. These pits now serve as valuable ecological niches for rare plant species such as yellow-green sedge and creeping winged pea.

Since the 1920s, Boswachterij Dorst has also been a recreational area. The most notable example is Natuurbad Surae, established in 1927 in a former clay pit. Although the swimming area was closed in 2006, the site has been returned to nature.
