Slowly the withered leaves swing from the trees on the forest floor. The few birds make remarkably little noise this autumn. Are the sad or tired? The winter supplies have probably already been built.
A biologist friend explained that the many acorns, pine cones, beechnuts and chestnuts are the result of the enormous drought in our country and almost all of Europe. The trees experience drought stress and start to produce as many large fruits as possible to allow the species to survive.
Are the trees that bad? They look beautiful, I asked.
Yes, he told me, the ground has been to dry for so many years that many trees have already collapsed. He shows me trees where the bark has been torn lengthwise and pulls the bark off the dead tree. He shows me one tree after another without leaves, with all kinds of fungi on the trunk. A tree with fungi at the roots and on the trunk is hopelessly lost, he says.
That is quite scary.
If at the end of October 2022 at these temperatures, 23c in the Netherlands, you still think the climate is normal, I don't know how to tell you that, in my opinion, it isn't.
about the estate Zegenwerp
The current situation arose around 1850, when the estate was transformed into the English landscape style. This strengthened the natural differences in height, which arose because the area was located on a cover sand ridge from the Ice Age.
In the forests, among other things, valley herb, common Solomon's seal and lily-of-the-valley. In the more swampy parts you will find king fern, marsh fern and gale.
The old deciduous forest is a breeding ground for tawny owl, black woodpecker, nuthatch and bullfinch.
To the east of the forest area are old fields along which lanes and hedgerows lie. Long speedwell grows on the banks of the Dommel.
A dam was built in the river Dommel, which was canalized in the 1950s. In 2006, a fish pass with a length of 960 m was opened. This bridges a height difference of 1.8 meters. The river lamprey, roadside and chub can now swim upstream again, while the bitterling, which lives in standing water, also benefits from this.
In 1929, the Golfclub de Dommel established west of the nature reserve. This one still exists. There are two freely accessible roads that lead through the golf course to the also freely accessible nature reserve.
