Ambient recording of a calm early Sunday morning on the river dike. All sounds far.
Notes on the sound recording
That's nice, there is now a bench in my favourite spot on the river. The sheep bleated like every morning. On the left, on the other side of the river 'Maas', a farmer puts down a tractor. He will sow soon. A train rushes across the steel bridge. A man comes close to the microphone and walks his dog in the floodplain.
Then, at eight o'clock, the bells of various churches in the villages around me. One pastor immediately starts ringing the bells. "Come on people, it's corona time. We are going to pray together, but then at home via internet ', he says. The sun has just risen and it is getting pleasantly warm. The water in the river is too low again. That is already the third year in a row.
On the right, ladies approach the playground. They are going to take a brisk walk on the dike. Now there are hardly any oncoming traffic for which you have to pull over to get one and a half meters.
The corona crisis will enter its third month tomorrow. There are fewer patients in the intensive cares. The question now is when the next major outbreak is coming. The weather is getting better and people seem to have had enough of the measures.
Now that the wind is increasing slightly and turns a few degrees to the north, the farmer on his tractor can be heard better and you can no longer hear the trains in the east. At the end the trains are back again.
A sheep has a bad voice. The man with the dog comes back and also looks and listens somewhat surprised to the hoarse animal. Moments later, the hoarse with his whole family mows the grass in front of my microphone, but as if the hoarse sheep see something different, he leaves with another.
Machines aren't always nice to hear, but when the distant sound blows through the wind, it's beautiful.
A man from the village is curious and asks what I am recording. As usual, I pretend I don't hear anything and don't answer. I do not look up from my note pad and calmly continue writing my report.
Always good to hear, the cuckoo. Then you know that it is really spring. It seems too early for swifts.
Walking dogs is a national activity. Sometimes I think people need such an animal to get out the door. Fortunately I do not suffer from that.
The anglers on the left awake. You sometimes hear them say something. Fishermen don't talk much.
And there comes the next person with his national occupation. The farmer with his tractor cannot get enough of his hard work.
A container ship slowly sails over the river. Too bad they don't have slow-pounding engines these days. Just like last week the ship is half empty. There is nothing to ship and it is the first one after fifty-five minutes of recording. That is also remarkable, even if it is Sunday.
An elderly lady, I estimate her eighty, walk up the dike with her Nordick sticks. If she goes down at the next transition, it is a brisk walk. The young cyclist moves more easily.
The parish priest slept in another village. It is only now that its bells are ringing. For a moment I wonder if he should not anoint someone first, death is just around the corner.
There are many sparrows and starlings here, which you hardly see at my house. You can also hear the robin, chiffchaff, wood pigeon and the great tits that you hear at our home. The sheep have long gone. I wait a while for the bell to ring in Bokhoven and then I go home.
The river dikes will soon be back for roaring tour bikes. No environment for me.
On the way back I see the old lady walking. She is clearly tired, but has walked the entire round. Awesome.
