Ambiance of the floodplain of river Maas near the village of Alem in the Netherlands. October afternoon 2019.
Sandwiched between the river Maas, the canal of Sint Andries and the water De Bol, a peninsula lights up. The village that lies on it is called Alem.
Due to its location, there is little local traffic. The one motorist who comes by looks suspicious at me. What is that stranger doing here, and what is that for a hairy bulb to the car, see him thinking. The lady walking past in her synthetic jacket, you can hear her, does not respond at all to that man with his head phone in the car, who nods so kindly. Apparently they don't like strangers here. Something completely different goes across the river. People come to you in a casual manner and start a chat. They ask, usually a little too noisy, what that furry ball is and if I'm filming. If I then explain to them that I am recording ambient sound, the harm has already been done for me.
The cold wind blows the last leaves of the trees this afternoon. On the right you can hear the village of Kerkdriel. On the left, on the other side of the river, traffic rushes along the provincial road from Het Wild to Maren-Kessen, both small villages.
The birds that are there are eagerly looking for food. Winter is coming, and you never know how cold it gets.
